Quantity Surveying is a profession that blends engineering, construction, and economics. Quantity Surveyors manage all costs associated with building and civil engineering projects. Their work is both office and site-based and the primary goal is to minimise expenses (and keep them within the limits of a budget). What is more, they aspire to do it without compromising on the quality of end results or failing to adhere to the building, health, and safety regulations.
Furthermore, they take part in projects and work with contractors/clients right from the start, preparing comprehensive project estimates. Often, they also gather tender and contract documentation, conduct feasibility studies, and undertake risk control. Once the building process starts, quantity surveyors keep close tabs on any variations that may lead to cost fluctuations.

Known in the industry as a Construction Cost Consultant or Commercial Manager, their role is to keep a close eye on project finances and contractual relationships. They make sure that the financial position of construction projects is accurately reported and controlled effectively.
Quantity Surveyors are always involved at the start of a project, being brought in to look at the feasibility of planned construction or repair efforts, they then remain as overseers during the capital expenditure phases of development. This means they are involved, often on the site, through to the completion of construction, keeping a constant eye on the forecaster and actual costs, as well as being required to react quickly to problems and changes in specifications with updated costings and feasibility reviews.
A day in the life of a quantity surveyor is varied – on one day you may find yourself in the office, and the next you may be out on a construction site meeting with clients or consulting with construction personnel. No two projects are ever the same and there is a great deal of variety, which can be quite interesting for someone who doesn’t like routine.
A Quantity Surveyor prepares tender and contract documents, carrying our cost analysis, monitoring cost variations and writing reports, finding out the client requirements and undertaking feasibility studies, allocating work to sub-contractors and making payments. Site visits are also a big part of the job, where you’ll need to make assessments on financial projections for future work.
